RijoPred

Potent Yet Gentle Steroid

RijoPred Tablets contain methylprednisolone which is a glucocorticoid. Glucocorticoids are adrenocortical steroids, both naturally occurring and synthetic, which are readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Methylprednisolone occurs as a white to practically white, odorless, crystalline powder.

Composition:

RijoPred Tablet for oral administration contains 8 mg of methylprednisolone.

Actions:

Methylprednisolone is a potent corticosteroid mainly used as anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive agents. Methylprednisolone is five times more potent in its anti-inflammatory properties relative to Hydrocortisone (cortisol)

Methylprednisolone is slightly more potent in glucocorticoid activity than Prednisolone, so it’s thought to be stronger than Prednisolone

Dasage and Administration

The initial dosage of Tablets may vary from 4 mg to 48 mg of methylprednisolone per day depending on the specific disease entity being treated. In situations of less severity lower doses will generally suffice while in selected patients higher initial doses may be required. The initial dosage should be maintained or adjusted until a satisfactory response is noted. If after a reasonable period of time there is a lack of satisfactory clinical response, RijoPred should be discontinued and the patient transferred to other appropriate therapy.

IT SHOULD BE EMPHASIZED THAT DOSAGE REQUIREMENTS ARE VARIABLE AND MUST BE INDIVIDUALIZED ON THE BASIS OF THE DISEASE UNDER TREATMENT AND THE RESPONSE OF THE PATIENT.

After a favorable response is noted, the proper maintenance dosage should be determined by decreasing the initial drug dosage in small decrements at appropriate time intervals until the lowest dosage which will maintain an adequate clinical response is reached. It should be kept in mind that constant monitoring is needed in regard to drug dosage. Included in the situations which may make dosage adjustments necessary are changes in clinical status secondary to remissions or exacerbations in the disease process, the patient’s individual drug responsiveness, and the effect of patient exposure to stressful situations not directly related to the disease entity under treatment; in this latter situation it may be necessary to increase the dosage of RijoPred for a period of time consistent with the patient’s condition. If after long-term therapy the drug is to be stopped, it is recommended that it be withdrawn gradually rather than abruptly.

Patient Perspective

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Steroid Cards : Remember to always carry a Steroid Treatment Card. Make sure your doctor or pharmacist has filled out the details of your medicine, including the dose and how long you will require steroid treatment. You should show your steroid card to anyone who gives you treatment (such as a doctor, nurse or dentist) while you are taking RijoPred, and for 3 months after you stop taking the tablets. If you are admitted to hospital for any reason always tell your doctor or nurse that you are taking RijoPred. You can also wear a medic-alert bracelet or pendant to let medical staff know that you are taking a steroid if you have an accident or become unconscious.

Adults: Depending on your condition and how severe it is. Your doctor will prescribe the lowest dose possible. Your doctor may tell you to take your daily dose all in one go, split your daily dose throughout the day, or take it every other day at 8.00 am. Swallow the tablets whole with a drink of water. The score line is not intended for breaking the tablet. Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking RijoPred.

If you are being given RijoPred because your body cannot make its own corticosteroids, your doctor may also want you to take a second type of steroid to help your salt balance. Your doctor may prescribe a higher dose at the start of your treatment to bring your condition under control. When your doctor is happy that your condition has improved your dose will be reduced gradually.

Normally the dose will be reduced by not more than 2 mg every 7 to 10 days.

Elderly: Your doctor may want to see you more regularly to check how you are getting on with your tablets.

Children and adolescents: Corticosteroids can affect growth in children, so your doctor will prescribe the lowest dose that will be effective for your child. Your doctor may tell you to give your child this medicine on every other day.

If you take more RijoPred than you should:It is important that you do not take more tablets than you are told to take. If you accidentally take too many tablets, seek medical attention straight away.

If you forget to take your RijoPred : Wait and take the next dose as normal. Do not take a dose to make up for the forgotten one but tell your doctor or pharmacist what had happened.

Stopping/reducing the dose of your RijoPred: Your doctor will decide when it is time to stop your dose.

You must not stop taking RijoPred suddenly, especially if you:

  • have had more than 6 mg RijoPred daily for more than 3 weeks
  • have been given high doses of RijoPred (more than 32 mg daily) even if it was only for 3 weeks or less
  • Have already had a course of corticosteroid tablets or injections in the last year
  • Already had problems with your adrenal glands (adrenocortical insufficiency) before you started this treatment
  • take repeat doses in the evening.

You will need to come off RijoPred slowly to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

These symptoms may include itchy skin, fever, muscle and joint pains, runny nose, sticky eyes, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, headache, feeling tired, peeling skin and weight loss.

If your symptoms seem to return or get worse as your dose of RijoPred is reduced tell your doctor immediately.
